"Boyz N the Hood" 20 Years Later

July 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of the film classic "Boyz N the Hood". This movie directed by John Singleton jump started several acting careers including Morris Chesnut, Nia Long, Ice Cube and Oscar Award Winning Cuba Gooding Jr

The film had a major impact in the motion picture world by portraying violence and coming of age for a group of friends living in South Central L.A. While many urban movies at that time focused on drugs and murder in the streets, Singleton chose a slightly different direction. He showed a single father trying to raise a young man while protecting him from the dangers that surrounded him. A single mother with 2 teenage boys on 2 seperate paths, one an aspiring Pro Football player looking to get a scholarship to major College. The other who succumbed to the evils of drugs and violence which resulted in him being  in and out of jail, nonetheless always playing the protector to his younger brother.  John Singleton was offered a $100,000 not to do the movie, to which he obviously declined.

What I remember most about this movie was being in Gr 8 and having the opportunity to be 1 of 2 students chosen in the school for a private screening of the film. Plenty of times during the movie my mouth dropped, especially the part when the grandmother comes running upstairs almost catching Tre in the bedroom.

So tell me, what do you remember most about Boyz N the Hood? Where did you first see the movie and what did you think of it after watching it for the first time?
